Spain had a heart wrenching loss to France yesterday that left Pau Gasol questioning his future with the Spain National team. The star who recently signed on with the Chicago Bulls met with reporters after the game.
“You never know when it is your last game or your last tournament,” Gasol told reporters after the 65-52 loss. “I would like to play until I am 50 but I doubt I will. It is an honor to play for my country but you never know…We have great young players coming through and I am sure that we will have a strong side for the future,” said the 34-year-old. “It is a painful defeat. We had big hopes and up until now had been playing very well.… I am proud of the team and my team-mates.
It is very painful but it is part of sport.”
The 2016 Rio Olympics isn’t far off but Gasol will be 36 at the time which is ways away from 50. Will he be too old? I don’t know but he played excellent these games and showed no signs of being unfit to play. Let’s hope he returns and we see Spain make another deep run in 2016. I’m calling it now, Team USA vs Spain in Pau Gasol’s last games.
