No matter how much money Phil Hughes made in salary this season , the fact that he was so close; and now yet so far from another half-a-millie has to be at least somewhat of a teeth-gritter.
According to ESPN, the Minnesota Twins right-hander has likely lost the chance to cash in on a $500,000 bonus because of a persistent rainstorm that washed out the last one-third of an inning he needed to reach 210 total innings pitched.
“I was very aware of it, but some things aren’t meant to be,” Hughes said, according to MLB.com.
With Twins manager Ron Gardenhire telling reporters in the postgame presser that he wouldn’t be using Hughes out of the bullpen for the final series vs the Detroit Tigers; it appears that 500k is indeed gone with the wind.
Although losing money is never preferable, Hughes can hang his hat on the fact that in addition to his $8 million base salary; he’s also made another 500k in other bonuses throughout the season.
Not bad at all.
