The New York Knicks recently announced the hires for new coach Derek Fisher’s coaching staff. One of those names has people talking. New Knicks assistant Brian Keefe spent two years in Oklahoma City as developmental coach before the Thunder promoted him to assistant coach, a position he held for five years. So with that length of time you can imagine he was close to some of those players including Kevin Durant. Well, Marc Berman of the New York Post is starting to stoke the fire.
Durant, a free agent in 2016, is very close to Keefe, according to an NBA source. “He’s Durant’s guy,’’ the league source said.
Now, there is no reason to dispute that Keefe and Durant are close friends. My problem is to even talk about something that is two years away is reckless, especially to this fan base. So are Knicks going to keep their cap space open for two years to land Durant? Maybe they will be in the running, I’m sure they plan on being in the Durant sweepstakes one way or another but are we going to try to find a “six degrees of Kevin Bacon” type connection to every hire for the next two years? We all remember what happened the last time people in New York were led to believe the (arguably) best player in the NBA was on his way to the Mecca years before it was even possible. You dont?
