Meet Drake Davis. He is a 2016 wide receiver recruit from Baton Rouge, Louisiana who has scholarship offers from Alabama, Florida State, Miami, Virginia Tech among others. At 6’4 215 ponds Davis would make a heck of a receiver at any of the programs mentioned, except he has decided to play soccer instead.
At least in one case, one high school junior with major college football offers, wide receiver Drake Davis (Fork Union, Va.), is opting for the latter.
According to Fork Union head coach Brian Hurlocker, Davis is not playing football this year to focus on soccer.
The four-star recruit is ranked as the nation’s No. 10 wide receiver and the No. 3 prospect in the state of Virginia in the 2016 class by 247Sports.com Composite Rankings.
Davis has offers from Alabama, Miami, Maryland, Temple, Florida State, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
“This is a decision he made in the spring and he’s stuck with it,” Hurlocker said.
Hurlocker said he’s fielded calls from all of the schools that have offered and a few more about Davis and his decision to play soccer throughout the summer.
This past week alone, both Georgia and Maryland inquired.
“I don’t push the kid to play,” Hurlocker said. “It’s his decision. He’s a good kid and a good athlete.”
Davis is a Division 1 recruit in soccer as well.
It’s not very often that you see a top football recruit opt for another sport. We often see recruits flirt with the MLB draft before finally deciding to stick with football in the end. I have to say I am intrigued by how this will turn out for Davis, he definitely doesn’t lack ability or athleticism. I wonder how many coaches will be in his ear trying to convince him to play football, it’s a long way until signing day for him.
