The inaugural College Football Top 25 rankings were unveiled tonight and despite these rankings not meaning much in the grand scheme of things, the selections by the playoff committee raised a few eyebrows. Lets take a look at the committee’s final four selections and see who missed the cut this week.
Top 4:
#1 Mississippi State
#2 Florida State
#3 Auburn
#4 Ole Miss
Missed The Cut:
#5 Oregon
#6 Alabama
#7 TCU
Recap
Folks don’t need to get up in arms about these rankings just yet because there is plenty of football left to be played. Many of the teams in the playoff picture still have to play each other, so there will be plenty of changing in these rankings before it is all said and done. Auburn at #3 was a bit a of surprise, as that would make them the best one loss team in the country and that is certainly up for debate. Ole Miss fresh off of a road loss to LSU made the cut at #4, and that raised even more eyebrows. If these rankings are an indicator for how things are going to be on a weekly basis, then it is going to be very interesting when we get down to the final cuts.
The committee is clearly taking a different approach to their selections than most people, that much is clear. I personally had Oregon and Alabama in the Top 4 at this point in the season and the committee has both of them on the outside looking in. I’m surprised that the committee has Oregon over Alabama at this point because the SEC dominates college football. If you take a look at it though, Alabama’s best wins are against Florida, Tennessee, and Texas A&M, all who haven’t been very good this year. I said before, if Oregon takes care of business and wins out, they will be in the playoff. Another team to keep an eye on going forward is TCU; if they win out and take the Big 12 title, they will be a very dangerous team in the playoff. I am a bit surprised that Notre Dame got ranked at #10 by the committee. I had them a bit higher at this point, but as I said before, the committee clearly isn’t thinking like the rest of us. The Fighting Irish have a lot of work to do and need some things to go their way to make it into the playoff this year.
With Auburn and Ole Miss scheduled to square off this weekend, there will more than likely be a new face in the top 4 next week. Everybody sit back, r-e-l-a-x, and take a chill pill. There is plenty of football left to be played, that’s the beauty of it.
