Former University of Texas running back Joe Bergeron has landed in more hot water off the field as he has been suspended indefinitely from the A&M Commerce football team.
Texas A&M University-Commerce (4-0, 3-1) will face a tough Lone Star Conference opponent on the road today when they take on Angelo State (3-1, 2-1). The Lions will be doing so without running back Joe Bergeron, who was suspended indefinitely from the team pending the result of an ongoing investigation into an off the field incident that occurred earlier this week.
“We have instituted a suspension from competition and team activities for violation of team and department policy while the university conducts its investigation,” A&M-Commerce head football coach Colby Carthel said. “It is also department policy not to comment further regarding on-going investigations.”
No further information regarding Bergeron’s suspension was available at press time Friday night.
Bergeron had been leading the team in rushing attempts (73), yards (406) and touchdowns (6), while also contributing 11 pass receptions for 165 yards and one score. The University of Texas transfer was dismissed earlier this year from the Longhorns football program by head coach Charlie Strong for unspecified rules violations. Second-string running back Richard Cooper, who rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown last week, should get the majority of the carries. The backup has 218 yards and 4 touchdowns on 32 carries in five games.
Charlie Strong has taken plenty of flak for dismissing so many players in such a short time span, especially ones that could have contributed this year. Bergeron didn’t want to right while he was in Austin and it has carried over to Commerce, I think Charlie got this one right.
