Canelo Alvarez’s mini-hiatus will soon come to an end and Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar De La Hoya is positioning Canelo for a huge 2015.
“I had a very important meeting yesterday with Canelo. I flew down to Guadalajara to go and see him, and we talked about a lot of things. We’re looking forward to next year being a huge year,” said De La Hoya.
“Canelo still wants to fight in May, so he’s going to fight in May. Against who? We’re going to start working on that. We’re going to start working on getting him the perfect guy to make that a huge event on that weekend.”
Canelo is on the brink of superstardom and 2015 is the year that can truly make him the face of Golden Boy Promotions and one of the greatest hispanic boxers of this generation. Oscar knows that and thats why Miguel Cotto id the perfect opponent.
“We have had some initial conversation, so, obviously, Cotto is on Canelo’s radar and he’s on the top of his list,” said De La Hoya. “But Canelo is Canelo where he can fight anybody and still generate the numbers that he’s happy with.”
That’s a classic negotiating tool by De La Hoya. He threw in the possibilities of fighting other boxers so that he can get Canelo the best deal and send a clear message to Cotto’s camp.
I’d bet the house on seeing these two fighters standing across the ring from each other in 2015.
