Geno Smith left himself open to a wide range of criticsm after he told reporters that he has shown flashes of being a “Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback” in his first two seasons.
You can’t show flashes of anything when you spend most of the putting up awful performances. Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said that Smith has played well at times, but the NFL isn’t about flashing skills.
“We’ve all got to do better,” Mornhinweg said, according to ESPN NewYork. “We all have to play better and we have to coach better. We’ll leave it at that.”
Mornhinweg elaborated when pressed on the issue.
“He certainly has shown flashes of playing well,” he said. “Like I said, we all have to play better. This isn’t about flashing or anything. We’ve got to play better. Everything we do has to be better. That takes hard work, it takes preparation, it takes a certain mentality.”
