Amir Khan needed an impressive victory over Devon Alexander to secure a shot at Mayweather in 2015; he did just enough to win over the fans and put himself as the next Mayweather victim.
Khan dominated Devon Alexander from the opening bell with a combination of speed and timing that left Alexander confused. Khan’s speed was his best in recent years and he showed that he wasn’t happy settling for jabs. Every punch led to another punch and those combinations slowed Alexander’s pressure.
Alexander wasn’t prepared to handle Amir Khan’s length either, as Khan constantly stayed outside and peppered him with punches. In synopsis, Khan made Alexander look like an amateur.
The biggest win of the night for Khan was his victory over the fans in attendance and those watching at home. Many twitter fans believe that Khan’s speed will hold up against Mayweather if the two will meet. That of course is absurd but that hope is what Khan needed moving forward. Fans just needed to believe that he is a worthy challenger for Floyd and they’ll buy into them fighting in the summer.
It’s no different than Maidana making fans believe he had enough power to test Floyd last year after his drubbing of Adrien Broner. We’ve all seen how that worked out for Marcos.
Khan said, “I called out Mayweather before but now I feel that I’ve proved to everyone that I deserve that fight.”
Maybe Khan will be different, maybe Khan will be the one to give Mayweather problems, only time will tell.
For now it seems as though Khan did enough to at least put his name atop the list of Floyd opponents.
