The former coach of the Buffalo Bills, Doug Marrone, who left them high and dry, opting out of his contract and pocketing a solid $4 million for his trouble, has popped up on coaching radars again.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Denver Broncos will conduct an interview with Marrone for the vacant head coaching position tomorrow. Personally, I’m not sure what the Broncos would see in Marrone. He’s a traditional, older fashioned coach with a mediocre record.
In his defense however, Marrone has improved whatever team he’s been named head coach of. The Bills went 6-10 in 2013, his first year, and improved to 9-7 in 2014. When he coached the Syracuse Orange football team, the team went 25-25 in his tenure, which may not sound like much, but is an improvement over their previous 50 games before him.
With only Atlanta and Denver left with head coaching openings, the opportunities for Marrone are definitely drying up, but with that $4 million rainy day fund, I can’t imagine he’s too worried about it.
