Is this a shot at Jim McMahon — an assessment of the current state of the Bears — or simply a Hall of Fame defensive tackle speaking delusion?
During a Jan. 29 interview with Artie Lange — Hampton, a Hall of Fame defensive lineman who played for the Bears from 1979-1980, said that with Cutler at the helm, the Bears would have won five Super Bowls.
“I would have gave anything to have him on our team,” the “Danimal” said on the podcast. “You give us Jay Cutler back in our day, not only do we win five Super Bowls in a row, but we don’t lose a game. Mark that down.”
Hampton tried to explain Cutler’s issues as a whole:
“His problem is he’s too petulant,” Hampton said. “He thinks he can make any throw, any time. He’s like a young Greg Norman. ‘I can hit anything I want.’ He’s too reckless and with a mediocre team like Chicago has, his mistakes are only magnified. If they get better he can get away with a few mistakes. He could become one of the elite quarterbacks.”
