The Chevrolet truck that Tom Brady was given for winning Super Bowl MVP, will be handed over to his teammate Malcolm Butler directly by Chevrolet. Butler made the most important play of the game, a game saving interception, and Tom Brady was more than willing to thank Butler by handing over the truck. But there was one problem, who will be expected to pay the taxes on the truck?
According to ESPN.com, Chevy spokesman Michael Albano said, the fully loaded Chevy Colorado will be given directly to Butler at an event being held in Boston next week.
Here’s the catch, if Brady receives the truck and gives it to Butler as an gift, Brady would have to count the value of the truck ($35,000) as income and he would be taxed on it. Brady also might have had to pay a gift tax as well. There is a law that states a U.S. resident can only give $5,430,000 worth of gifts in their lifetime before having to pay a tax on what they give.
I feel that Brady should have just sucked it up and paid the taxes. If it wasn’t for the play Butler made at the end of the game, Brady and the Patriots wouldn’t have won the game. If he is really that thankful for Butler, just pick up the tab.
Butler, a rookie, made $585,000 this past season which includes $165,000 all Patriots players received for the postseason. Tom Brady has made $150 million in his career. Just pick up the tab Tom.
