Most of us long time wrestling fans can remember a different John Cena than the cookie cutter we see on TV these days. We remember a John Cena with ruthless aggression from back in the days. You know, the guy that would come to the ring spitting a rap against his opponent. It was during one of raps highest peaks when Cena used the gimmick. Cena even released rap albums. PG-13 of course. Well, Boston area rapper Esoteric went on a podcast and admitted that he wrote John Cena’s rap lyrics
Via the Asked Podcast,
“I got a call one day, ‘Yo, John used your verses in the ring the other night!’ and I was like ‘What?’
It was from this really, really old song that never came out. It was like, the first rap he ever did in the ring, and he just had it committed to memory, so he dropped it in the ring. I hadn’t seen him for a year at that point, and it turns out John is in WWE, and his gimmick is as a rapper, and he’s using my lyrics.
He would call me six hours before a show and be, ‘Yo, I’m going in the ring, I need some shit for the Undertaker, man. Can you come up with some lines about the Undertaker?’ My wife would be, like, what are we doing this evening, and I’d be ‘Listen, I have to write this Undertaker verse real quick.’”
This is devastating. I mean I thought John Cena was true to the art of writing? This is like the time I was five and found out that the presents appearing every Christmas was from my parents not a big dude in a red suit. I was a big fan of this character being a fan of rap. I actually felt his raps weren’t corny as they could have come across if done by the wrong person. Of course I wouldn’t be surprised if Cena got help and he added his own stuff too. I shall hold out hope on that one. What do you think? Did he write anything?
