The Denver Broncos will use the franchise tag on Demaryius Thomas Monday — giving the organization time to work out a long term deal with the stud wideout.
The Denver Post reports the star receiver will get the tag and will not reach free agency after failing to agree to a long-term deal with the Broncos before Monday’s deadline.
The Broncos have until 4 p.m. ET on Monday to use its lone franchise tag. Thomas will make close to $12.8 million next year if he chooses to accept it.
The Broncos are expected to use the “nonexclusive” tag on Thomas — daring teams to negotiate with Thomas.
The “nonexclusive” tags makes it possible for other teams to negotiate with Thomas, although the Broncos would have the right to match any offer. Should the Broncos decide against matching an offer, the team signing away Thomas would have to compensate Denver with two first-round draft picks.
