Well you see Mr. Johnson, Geno Smith is entering his 3rd season in the NFL, so he probably should be further ahead of the Heisman Trophy winner.
The Jets owner made himself and Geno Smith look crazy by comparing the embattled quarterback to Marcus Mariota.
Geno’s probably way ahead of him at this point,” Johnson told reporters during a break in the NFL owners meetings at the Arizona Biltmore. “I don’t know if you guys [in the media] have skepticism on that or not. Certainly, [Mariota’s] college career was great.”
Johnson then ruined his praise of Smith by saying the Jets “haven’t made the determination” whether Smith is indeed more developed than Mariota.
Johnson also refused to endorse Smith as the Jets starter, yet he’s ahead of Mariota.
“That’s something we’re going to look at,” Johnson said when asked if Smith has the No. 1 job. “We’ve got from now until the start of the season to address every position. We’re going to have competition at every position, and hopefully that’ll bring out the best in him and all of the quarterbacks.”
