For Patriots fans, the thought of losing Revis is one they haven’t even begun to brace for. We’re just over a month removed from their dramatic Super Bowl victory over the Seahawks, and much of the region isn’t quite ready to move on from last year.
As Revis became a clog in their championship defense, resigning the CB nearly became a sure thing according to those who follow team (perhaps out of wishful thinking). The logic seemed to be that even if they weren’t able to reach a lengthy extension, surely the Patriots would at least pick up that second year option on his contract, albeit at a hefty price.
ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter was a guest on ESPN Radio’s “The Herd” program on Monday morning, and the topic of cornerback Darrelle Revis was brought up. Schefter pointed out that Revis is technically under contract for 2015 with a $25 million cap charge, and then said, “It would surprise me if New England picked that up.”
Schefter then talked about Revis hitting the open market because of that, where he is projected to be “another coveted free agent.”
Schefter’s thoughts on the Patriots possibly retaining Revis?
With Schefter now reporting that the second year is unlikely to be picked up, the region will hold their breath and hope. The Patriots have already decided to let Safety Devin McCourty test the free agency waters, and now must work with Revis and his agent on an extension that will ensure their prized CB doesn’t follow him out the door.
March 10th is the official start of free agency.
