Ronda Rousey beat her last 2 opponents in a combined 30 seconds… I’d say a fight against a retired mother of 2 doesn’t scare her much.
Last week ex-boxing champ Laila Ali said that she could beat the UFC women’s bantamweight champion. Ronda gave her thoughts on the possible match up:
“If she wants to take me up on that, I’m around,” Rousey says of Ali. “She’s retired and has several kids. I understand why she’d think that because she has a size advantage, but if you saw my last fight it had nothing to do with size or strength at all. That’s not how I beat people. So you can’t count having a size and strength advantage as having a real advantage against me.”
It’s all in fun and it’s a scenario hyped up a lot by us in the media but when you step back and look at it the fight has some merit.
Ronda is without real competition within her division, check her last two fights, and Laila Ali will most definitely last more than 16 seconds, so where’s the downside? It’s unlikely she can handle Rousey’s ground game but she has a punchers chance as long as the fight stays on the feet.
It’s no more of a publicity stunt than signing CM Punk was. At least Ali has a fighting pedigree and has held major titles in combat sports, not sports entertainment.
