Keith Thurman came into this fight looking to become a household name and be the first fighter to stop Robert Guerrero, he did one of the two.
Thurman wowed the packed crowd at the MGM Grand and judging from twitter reactions, the world. His style was equally fundamental and brawler. He knew the perfect times to stand and engage with Guerrero and the times when it was more beneficial to move and pick his spots. He consistently tested Robert’s chin and made him adjust to his fighting style.
This wasn’t an easy fight by any means though. Guerrero showed that he is a true warrior and that he boast one of the strongest chins in boxing. He ate punches that would’ve floored almost every other boxer in the division, Pacquiao & Mayweather included. He grew stronger and more confident the last three rounds which led to some of the best boxing action we’ve seen in years.
These two lived up to and surpassed expectations.
The question now turns to whether Thurman’s performance against Robert was better than Floyd’s?
Guerrero was easily the best fighter Thurman has faced in his career and he made him look one dimensional most of the fight, Thurman’s resume does not yet compare to Floyd’s but in this common opponent many will argue that Keith was more impressive.
He even managed to floor Guerrero with a well timed uppercut.
Thats’s something Floyd was unable to do in his contest against “The Ghost.”
In an interview we had with Thurman earlier in the week he made it known that he wanted to put his name amongst the elite fighters in the world and he had one eye toward the future.
“With that in mind I’m willing to go after Marcos Maidana, I will follow Floyd’s footsteps. Whoever he fight’s I’ll fight next. I only want to fight real champions; I want to fight real opponents, so that I can climb the latter,” said Thurman.
‘One Time’ gave us that small glimpse into his future plans and his pursuit of Floyd Mayweather. A fight against Floyd may very well never happen for Thurman but he can do a lot for his status i boxing by clearing out the same fighters as Floyd and doing it in a more impressive fashion.
For those in attendance it wasn’t even close, Thurman-Guerrero was leaps and bounds better then Floyd’s match but that is based off of a lot of raw emotion. When the dust settles Keith hopes that his combative style will prove to hold up to Floyd’s perfect defense.
That is how Keith can go from talented fighter to an all-time great.
