There are two things going on here.
1- What Golden Tate actually said.
2- Should have Tate said it?
First, let take a look at what he said.
You have to be really mature to be able to look at what he said and discuss it rationally. His statement is 100% true, we don’t know. Unless there are some videos, photos, eye witnesses, it is just he said/she said. You never want to blame the victim, but of the person being accused if they are being lied on, wouldn’t they be the real victim? That goes for men and women. Women are often vilified for reporting domestic violence, so it goes both ways, even when it is obvious they have been abused. So, in that vein, his point if you look at them just as the words written are accurate, because it should be always innocent until proven guilty, but many times it is guilty until you can prove your innocence. Sometimes even when you are proven innocent, people still will associate you with whatever you were accused or if you were the accuser. Once again, you should never blame the victim, but you should try to the best of your ability find out who the actual victim is before coming to a conclusion.
As far as the second point, Tate felt the need to speak up, so that is a personal decision. My advice to any athlete & frankly anyone in the world is just be aware if you say things like this there is going to be backlash and you better be ready to say it with your chest. Once it is out there you can’t take it back. I believe in freedom of speech, but that doesn’t mean freedom of consequences. Social media doesn’t really do “entitled to your opinion” very well. Your choice, so think before you hit send.
