The Patriots made their way to the White House today for the traditional winner’s ceremony of pictures, hand shakes, smiles and, in what has become a tradition for Obama, a few well-placed jokes amidst the speech.
With the Patriots in town, there were a few lob-ball topics the President’s writers were sure to hit on: Gronk, DeflateGate, and the Boston accent.
The President’s charm and delivery – not to mention his position of power – usually lead to a hearty laugh from the crowd no matter the corniness of the joke. Today’s inflation joke was different, though, and timed impeccably.
After Obama began with “I usually tell a bunch of jokes at these events” … then came in hard with “but with the Patriots in town I was afraid that 11 out of 12 would fall flat” BOOM! Roasted.
Obviously the team didn’t much appreciate this, but they were good sports about it.
It drew groans and hand waves from the group crowded behind him. Belichick smiled and threw a thumbs down pose while team owner Bob Kraft, 77 years young yet still quick witted, piped back, “The Jets told you to do that“.
I’m sure there are some who took offense to Obama’s joke, but how could you not point at the elephant in the room?
The President addressed the issue in a joking manner and moved on swiftly – you can’t really hope for anything better then that as a Pat’s fan. Plus, as far as the corny jokes Obama usually tells, this one was actually pretty clever.
President Obama then goes on to remind Gronk to keep his shirt on and make fun of Malcom Butler’s small stature – the guy’s got jokes for days. You mad bro?
