John Schneider, Seattle Seahawks general manager, doesn’t think there is any chance that quarterback Russell Wilson will leave the NFL to pursue a career in MLB but the Texas Rangers still think they have a chance to steal him away.
Wilson was interviewed by HBO’s Bryant Gumbel, and as more quotes emerge it’s clearly Wilson is serious about being a two-sport athlete.
“Let’s be blunt, you played minor-league ball for a while. Correct me if I’m wrong your numbers were .227 average, five home runs, 26 RBIs. If the numbers were better, would you ( play baseball and football),” said Gumbel
“I wouldn’t be worried about the statistics of it, I know I can’t play in the big leagues. With the work ethic and all that, I think I definitely could for sure. And that’s why the Texas rangers got my rights. And they want me to play. Jon Daniels, the GM, wants me to play. We were talking about it the other day,” shared Wilson.
Wilson is entering the final year of his rookie deal with the Seahawks and is in line for a big contract. You would have to think that which Wilson’s interest in baseball, there maybe a section in his near deal that protect the Seahawks and contractually keeps Wilson from pursuing baseball. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
The interview is set to air Tuesday night at 10 p.m. ET.
