Even though it isn’t football, this is definitely a start in the right direction for the Lone Star Showdown rivalry.
Texas and Texas A&M have decided to schedule each other in baseball beginning in the 2016 season.
Texas A&M and Texas will schedule each other during the baseball regular season beginning in 2016, according to Aggie coach Rob Childress. He revealed the tidbit during an interview for this story on the top-ranked Aggies last week.
The schedule is still unofficial, but the plan is for A&M to host the Longhorns next season and to visit UT in Austin in 2017.The rivals haven’t played in the regular season since A&M departed the Big 12 for the SEC beginning with the 2012-2013 school year. The programs met in the NCAA regional last season, with UT winning the regional and advancing.
The schools still have no plans to resume their football series, as has been discussed and debated passionately since the Aggies split from the Big 12.A&M and Texas have, though, met in a variety of sports over the last couple years. The women’s basketball programs met the last two seasons in events held at neutral sites. The men’s basketball teams have not yet played.
While some won’t get too fired up about the baseball for series, I for one loved watching the two schools square off in the NCAA’s Super Regional in Houston last year. The house was packed and the rivalry felt real again for the first time in awhile.
Even though the two schools don’t have plans of playing each other in football any time soon, I still think we will get there at some point and time, just have to take baby steps.
