We all know that a lot of rappers have dreams of being athletes and a lot of athletes have dreams of being rappers – see Drake, Shaq, Master P, Greg Hardy, Nelly, Damian Lillard, Roy Jones Jr., The Game…I’m pretty sure y’all get the point. Despite those dreams, rarely – if never, is anyone able to pull off mastering both, but that doesn’t stop them.
The latest athlete to try his hand at a career in hip hop is former NBA player Boobie Gibson, who recently released a video for the track “Suicide.” The song talks about the recent killings of African Americans by law enforcement and the video references the murders of Trayvon Martin, Freddie Gray, Walter Scott, Mike Brown, Eric Garner and more. It also features his son with singer Keyshia Cole.
The message is something that is much needed in our community filled with the proverbial Trap Queens and F*cking Up of Commas, but because of his questionable flow and people naturally not taking him seriously because of the athlete connection, I don’t know if it will be heard like it should be. Either way, salute to Booby for this powerful video.
