There are way too many Bowl games in College Football, but don’t expect that number to come down anytime soon.
On the contrary, the NCAA has reportedly agreed to allow for 3 more games this season; bringing the total amount of Bowl games up to 42.
The Tucson bowl will matchup teams from the Mountain West and Conference USA, while teams from the American Athletic Conference and Sun Belt will face off in both the Austin and Orlando bowls.
Are you aware of just what that number means? With 42 Bowl games, 82 of 127 FBS teams – aka a whopping %65 – will be invited to a Bowl.
Reminder: these games began as a way to showcase the best teams in lieu of a college playoff. While Bowl games are supposed to be a celebratory reward for those teams skilled enough to achieve it, it has become the norm for teams to participate in them.
Now, instead of looking at teams that make it to a Bowl and thinking, “these guys must have had a good season”; you’ll be looking at teams that couldn’t manage to appear in one and be reminded of how miserably they must have failed that season.”Ha! They couldn’t even make a Bowl Game!” will be the new diss. The whole things backwards.
It won’t stop.
In fact, I fully expect for the NCAA to add even more Bowl games in the future.
As ESPN’s numbers guy Darren Rovell pointed out, a higher number of Bowl games has not resulted in a lower number of viewers for sponsorship’s. He adds, “In fact, evidence suggests that adding the word “bowl” only adds viewers”.
We all know viewers = dollars. And like Puffy said, it’s all about the benjamin’s.
