Charlie Weis has had a tumultuous career since leaving the Patriots in 2004.
After leading 3 Super Bowl winning offenses to the promised land, he felt well equipped to take on the college ranks; beginning with his now infamous stop in Notre Dame. Obviously, his endeavors ultimately failed, but my guess is he wouldn’t take any of it back after the sort of contracts he was able to pull.
His deal in Notre Dame is one that he’s STILL getting paid for (since they ultimately fired him). Eventually, Weis found a head coaching vacancy at Kansas University – then signed a deal in which that contract is still paying him handsomely, as well.
Is Charlie Weis really just a savvy business man or something?
Charlie Weis hasn’t coached Notre Dame since 2009, but could end up earning almost $19 million in buyout money, according to Matt Fortuna of ESPN.
In addition to the $5.63 million he is still owed from Kansas, the coach could earn about $24.5 million for not coaching two NCAA college football teams.
I guess thats what 3 Super Bowls will get you.
Now the question becomes: would Weis have made more over the long haul, via endorsements/Bob Kraft’s good graces, by staying with the Patriots? That answer is a resounding no. He’d be lucky if he made what he’s making just this year (24.5mil) in the 10 years he would have been with the Pats since.
It was a good move financially, no doubt.
