Marvel is reportedly courting Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey for the role of Norman Osborn, who goes on to become one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes in Green Goblin.
A site called Point of Geek is confirming the news from a source that Marvel has already approached McConaughey for the role. Just last week McConaughey told media that he had read through scripts sent from both Marvel and Warner Bros but so far nothing intrigued him enough to sign on.
The script for the MCU reboot of Spider-Man is being worked on, so of the scripts McConaughey was sent Spidey sure wasn’t one of them, so there’s still a very real chance he could sign on. Point of Geek reported:
Unfortunately it is unclear what role that WB/DC has in mind for McConaughey, but we did uncover the character that Marvel has pitched to the Academy Award winning actor. Our sources have let us know that Marvel has targeted McConaughey for Norman Osborn, aka the Green Goblin, in the upcoming rebooted Spider-Man franchise.
It makes sense for the studio to target such a high caliber actor, especially since the role has a tradition of being played by acclaimed actors such as, William Dafoe and Chris Cooper. Getting McConaughey on board would instantly rejuvenate the role of Osborn, whose overall prominence in the comics has risen over the past decade or so. It is unclear to what extent Sony and Marvel intend to include Osborn in the Marvel cinematic universe in the future.
Now, here’s where I find fault with the report–true or not (still not officially confirmed) this is the MCU’s much anticipated Spider-Man movie that they’ve worked tirelessly with Sony to get the rights of–they’ve gone so far as to chuck the purpose of an origin story and come out guns blazing, so to speak, so why do a villain that’s already been done more than once?
One would think the MCU Spider-Man would do a villain that hasn’t been as focused on like Green Goblin, who we saw throughout Sam Raimi’s Spidey run.
Also, since Spider-Man is now in a shared universe, Green Goblin isn’t a villain that really translate into the MCU as a whole. A villain like Venom, could tie in to the intergalactic part of the MCU–like the Guardians of the Galaxy stuff, now we know Thanos is creeping closer and closer.
Do you think Green Goblin’s coming back?
