Selma director Ava DuVernay was rumored months ago be eyed by Marvel to direct a movie. At the time, DuVernay chalked it up to pure speculation and admitted to not being a comic follower, but did express interest in deconstructing a character’s origin.
Now, The Wrap has reported that Marvel is courting DuVernay to direct either Black Panther or Captain Marvel both unique movies given one stars a premiere ‘black superhero’ and the other is a standalone MCU movie with a female protagonist–neither done before in the MCU.
In perhaps a ‘convenient’ coincidence, the news of Marvel’s reported interest came the same day the American Civil Liberties Union asked for a federal investigation on Hollywood’s hiring practices–specifically on the gender inequality within Hollywood. Even more damning considering the fact Marvel has never once had a female director.
DuVernay may lack experience in doing action-packed blockbuster movies, but what she does excel in is telling a story. One of the reasons a movie like Captain America: Winter Soldier or the Dark Knight movies continue to be praised long after blowing up the box-office is because of the quality of the story telling that made up the movie.
I think that’s why a lot of superhero movies get knocked, they’re seen as pure box-office porn with little in the way of plot and character development. So, don’t count her experience as a negative.
