Brandi Chastain’s infamous 1999 historic goal for the Women’s World Cup will live on in infamy as well as the photo above. Today, Chastain is still heavily involved in the world of soccer and continues to motivate others to play the sport.
With the Women’s World Cup set to start on June 8, Team USA is being closed looked at as well as a few other favorites that are looking for their chance to shine amongst the great. Black Sports Online had the opportunity to speak with Brandi Chastain about the upcoming World Cup as well as her involvement with the Capital One Cup.
1) In regards to the World Cup, which is coming up in a few days, how does it feel to see the US women’s national team advance this far? How does it feel to see them participate in the world cup.
It’s always exciting to see the red, white and blue out there on the field. I love the patriotism out there. The US is very excited about being apart of this World Cup. We see women’s soccer from all corners of the world and the different philosophies about how it should be played. Family and friends are apart of this because it’s closer to home.
There’s so many things I love about it. Capital One recognizes the hard work and dedication from both the men’s and women’s side in an equal fashion. There is one champion crown on the men’s side and one crown on the women’s side. The fact that I get to be on the same team as Jenny Finch is a real honor because of the trailblazing of who I am working with. The Capital One Cup is supporting the Women’s World Cup by virtually giving these women a place to play and supporting them with academic scholarships. It’s pretty remarkable.
Differences? Oh yeah, we have a lot of differences but we have a lot of similarities as well. I think what’s very unique about the US team is that whether you go back to the first team that played in the mid 80s to now, they have spirit and will. They go to the field with competitiveness and once they go to the field, they feel that they have an advantage. You’re not questioning if you’re good enough. I hope this team has this closeness.
Oh gosh! I love seeing all the teams. I’m always intrigued by the new teams because to go to the World Cup for the first time ever is very special. They have the chance to represent their country and also inspire young girls everywhere. It’s also an opportunity to show that soccer is everywhere. I’d like to see a team like Colombia and what did they learn from last time. They’ve been in the mist of things for a while.
