Miguel Cotto will first have to get by Daniel Geale, this Saturday night at the Barclays Center, but a matchup with Canelo Alvarez looms on the horizon.
Cotto also owes a mandatory defense to WBA/IBO middleweight champion and monster Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. According to Freddie Roach, Cotto’s trainer, the winner of a Cotto vs Alvarez matchup, will probably finally give ‘GGG’ the big money fight he’s been chasing.
“Cotto works hard, he trains tremendously. Again, I hope Geale gives us some rounds because we’ve been off for a while. And then I hope that we go into the Canelo fight…that would be great to have him next. And then the winner of that fight will probably fight Triple G…..and then maybe, I think, it’s time [for Cotto to] call it a day,” Roach told BoxingScene.com.
Fights with Canelo and possibly Golovkin would be a lot for a younger fighter to handle. Either way, a few heavy-handed showdowns loom in the middleweight division.
