On June 2nd, FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced that he would be stepping down from his position amidst one of the largest sports scandals in history. Blatter just had been re-elected as president just days before. Now, it appears that Blatter may be backtracking on his decision to resign.
“I have not resigned,” he said. “I put my mandate in the hands of an extraordinary congress.”
“Only those who know the past can understand the present and shape the future,” he added in his speech at the FIFA museum. “Or in other words: the ball is round – but only those who come from outer space know the actual dimensions of our sport … For me personally, the museum is a labor of love. But do not get me wrong: I’m not ready for the museum nor for a waxwork yet.”
The financial scandal continues to rock FIFA, but nothing has been pinned to Blatter. If he does indeed stay on as FIFA president, what will this mean for the organization? It is assumed that FIFA will be watched more closely than ever before. However, Blatter seems to always step out unscathed.
