Free-agent safety C.J. Spillman — accused of attacking a woman in September — has been formally charged with sexual assault according to the New York Daily News.
According to Michael O’Keeffe, Spillman was charged in relation to an alleged incident that occurred Sept. 20 at the Cowboys’ team hotel in a Dallas Suburb.
Spillman is accused of sexually assaulting a woman Sept. 20 at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, the Cowboys’ team hotel since 2009. Grapevine police completed their investigation in February, and a Tarrant County grand jury handed down an indictment charging Spillman with sexual assault on Monday.
Responding to calls for his resignation from victim advocates and women’s organizations angered by the tepid discipline meted out to Ray Rice and others accused of violent crimes, Goodell vowed to get tough on players accused of domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault at a Sept. 19 news conference in New York.
The incident allegedly took place one day after Roger Goodell vowed to start dropping the hammer on guys for their transgression.
Spillman was allowed to play in the Cowboys’ 34-31 victory over the Rams in St. Louis on Sept. 21 — nor was Spillman disciplined by the Cowboys or the NFL.
