Floyd Mayweather is adamant that the September 12th fight against Andre Berto will be his last but many assume that it’s just an easy fight to stay active until next spring. That’d make Mayweather the man chasing the historic 50-0 mark, the first boxer to fight in the new MGM Grand arena in Las Vegas and a free agent (This is the last fight he has under contract with Showtime). With the right opponent the revenue from that fight could easily top his Pacquiao payday, but once again it’ll take the right opponent.
Longtime boxing trainer Abel Sanchez feels he knows the perfect man for that fight.
“Golovkin is willing to go down to junior middleweight to make the fight happen with Mayweather, and there’s no reason why Mayweather can’t take the fight with Golovkin, because Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez are both the same size.”
“The belt he [Mayweather] holds is at 154,” Sanchez said. “Now if he beats Golovkin there’s nothing else for him to do unless he’s going to fight [Wladimir] Klitschko. So if Golovkin wasn’t willing to go down to 154, I could understand it, but he’s [Golovkin] willing to make him at the weight where he’s a champion for two belts. Golovkin is no bigger than Canelo, and he [Mayweather] fought Canelo. Golovkin doesn’t blow up like Canelo did, and he fought Canelo. I don’t see the ‘he’s [Golovkin] not a draw.’ I think that’s something on our side too. So hopefully if that [Golovkin vs. Mayweather] happens, it will happen next year. If it does, it will be a great spectacle like this [Golovkin vs. Lemieux] is starting to be,” Sanchez said.
Sanchez happens to be GGG’s trainer so there is definitely bias in his choice, but his reasoning remains sound. GGG is doing a great job selling tickets for his upcoming PPV in NYC and his KO power is an automatic draw for the casual boxing fan.
The only question is whether he’s too dangerous of a fighter for Mayweather at this point in his career. Why face a heavy hitter like Golovkin when a fight with Amir Khan is always an option or a rematch with Pacquiao is on the table?
