After watching some of the Buffalo Bills preseason action, it cames as a complete surprise that they decided to part ways with veteran running back Fred Jackson. Jackson was released early Monday morning as the team decided to go with youth over experience but what’s next for Fred Jackson?
The Dallas Cowboys loss the league leading rusher DeMarco Murray this offseason and their ground attack has been left as a giant question mark headed into the season. The Cowboys’ backfield now features Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar, all complete wildcards. They believe in the trio and have said they are not interested in signing Fred Jackson but should they?
Randle played well in limited action last season. His 51 carries and 343 yards came at an impressive 6.7 yard per carry clip. My question with Randle is simply can he produce those same numbers as the lead back? Darren McFadden has looked impressive during the preseason because for once he is healthy but how long will that last? McFadden has only played in 16 games once during his 7 year career. Lance Dunbar won’t be much of a factor in my eyes. He’s a quick, elusive yet a small running back who can break off big plays but isn’t much of a threat in-between the tackles. Fred Jackson could definitely produce in the Cowboys back field but I don’t feel he is needed.
The Cowboys have spent years building what is viewed as the best offensive line in the NFL. No need to bring in a veteran to take carries away from young guys who could later blossom to something big. I think the Cowboys will be fine with their current roster. No they won’t have a 1,500 yard back this season but if they can all stay healthy, and use a running back by committee approach, they will still be successful. The offensive line is that good. Protect Romo and make a few running lanes for the running back and the team will do damage this season.
