Tyshawn Taylor had a cup of coffee in the NBA with the Nets, but it appears he has fallen on hard times or he just thought he could get away with this fraud.
A former Brooklyn Nets player used a bogus money order at a Hoboken grocery store for $1,000, police said.
Tyshawn Taylor, 25, of Secaucus, turned himself into Hoboken Police Department on Aug. 6, police confirmed on Thursday. Taylor, a former NBA player and a local star, allegedly tried to pass off a fake money order at the check cashing section of the Big Banner Food Store on May 18. The order was for $1,000. The owner of the store learned that the money order—which was issued in San Antonio, Tex.—was fake and tried to recover the money from Taylor, police said. When Taylor wouldn’t pay, the owner filed a complaint, police said.
Luisiana Jimenez, whose parents own the Jackson Street store, told NJ Advance Media that Taylor has been a customer since he was a little kid. She said her parents initially didn’t want to press charges. Her father, Luis Jimenez, who’s owned the store since 1987, said when they discovered that the money order was fake, they reached out to Taylor and his family. But still, the pro-basketball player refused to pay, he said.
Taylor he is currently playing internationally in Puerto Rico.
