While veteran pass rusher Robert Mathis was serving a four-game suspension last year, he wound up tearing his Achilles, which forced him to miss the entire season.
There’s been a sense of belief that Mathis would be ready for the season opener against Buffalo, but Colts owner Jim Irsay thinks otherwise.
“It’s hard to say,” Irsay said. “We want to make sure the doctors feel he’s ready. And that re-injuring and that sort of thing is not going to be a problem. We’ve talked about kind of October, roughly. Can he come back quicker than that? Knowing Robert, anything is possible. I really just don’t think he’s going to be ready for the Buffalo game at the start of the season.”
With Mathis being 34-years-old, I think the Colts are doing the right thing.
Better to be safe than sorry.
