It’s not often that WWE puts together a show whose magnitude rivals Wrestlemania, but that’s exactly what we have this Sunday when SummerSlam hits Barclays Arena for a four-hour show. An action-packed card of nine matches features the long-awaited rematch between Brock Lesnar and the Undertaker, a title for title match between John Cena and Seth Rollins, as well as a potential show-stealing bout between Kevin Owens and Cesaro.
Needless to say, anticipation and expectations are at all-time highs for the Summer classic, so let’s take a look at what we can expect to go down Sunday night!
Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker
Nearly a year and a half after Brock Lesnar ended the Undertaker’s undefeated streak at Wrestlemania XXX, we finally get our rematch. On Sunday there will be no stipulations, no titles on the line, just the Dead Man’s pride versus the Beast’s ego.
At last month’s Battleground, Lesnar looked to get some revenge and regain his WWE World Heavyweight title in a match with Seth Rollins. The Beast Incarnate was in control and looked to be a mere seconds away from winning back the strap when…
GONG!
The Deadman made his first appearance since Wrestlemania and attacked Lesnar with one hell of a low blow.
But it isn’t officially a Taker return until someone gets Tombstoned.
For added measure, Taker hit another Tombstone on Lesnar and the message had been sent, Taker was officially back and looking for revenge.
The next night on Raw, the Dead Man made it known that he had come back to send Lesnar to hell. After 18 months of Paul Heyman constantly reminding the world of what Lesnar did at ‘Mania 30, Taker had finally had enough.
Not one to take a low blow/Tombstone combo lightly, Lesnar came out charging at Taker and it took the entire Raw locker room to separate the two.
Now, after weeks of anticipation, we finally get our rematch as Taker and Lesnar will face off in the squared circle in Sunday night’s main event. In the last three years, Lesnar has defeated Triple H, CM Punk and John Cena (The Welcome to Suplex City match) at SummerSlam. Taker meanwhile hasn’t competed at the Summer classic since 2008.
So why does it feel inevitable that Taker will even this series at one match apiece? Oh that’s right, because the rubber match will probably main event Wrestlemania 32!
Either way, Sunday night’s main event should be one hell of a match.
