LSU defensive back Jalen Mills reportedly has suffered a broken fibula during practice that could keep him out four to six weeks.
Here are the detals from The Times-Picayune:
LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette confirmed that Mills was injured but would not specify the nature of the injury. Mills, a four-year starter and leader in the secondary, is expected to be out four to six weeks. LSU opens at home with McNeese State on Sept. 5 then plays at Mississippi State a week later before hosting Auburn at Tiger Stadium on Sept. 19.
Junior Rickey Jefferson will likely step up to take Mills’ place in the lineup while junior Corey Thompson also should become part of the mix.
Mills is the team’s most experienced player with 39 starts in 39 career games. He was the team’s seventh leading tackler with 62 stops last year and has 186 in his career. In his career, he has six interceptions, 13 passes broken up and three sacks.
This is a very unfortunate blow for LSU as the season nears. While Mills is expected back at some point this season, it will be hard to replace the experience and talent that he brings to that secondary in the meantime.
Wishing the young man a speedy recovery.
