Drake and Future have finally released their long-awaited collaboration album entitled What A Time To Be Alive. Drake’s deal with Apple made it possible for the tracks to be unveiled on the OVO Sound Radio Show On Beats 1, and then followed with an exclusive album release that only Apple users had access to. Most of the production comes from Metro Boomin, along with regular Drake collaborators Southside, Boi-1da and Noah “40” Shebib.
“It’s a little soundtrack for people that need it right now. I went to Atlanta for six days, a couple weeks ago with the hopes of doing some songs with Future, and when you get around Future, it’s like a vortex, that guy can outwork anybody right now,” Drake said. “It’s tough to see someone do four, five songs in one night and not try to match it.”
This album is indeed for the people. With upbeat songs like “Digital Dash”, “Jumpman”, and “Big Rings”, fans will be dancing with a drink in their hand in the clubs. “Plastic Bag” will be sure to have the strip clubs jumping as they rap about strippers placing their money from dancing in a plastic bag. Drake’s “30 for 30 Freestyle” has become a fan favorite.
Of course Drake and Future couldn’t have a new album without taking a few subliminal shots. A lot of fans are speculating that “Diamonds Dancing” was about Drake’s ex, Rihanna. In the song he says’ “You doing me dirty, you know, how we let it get like this I don’t know, but that n*gga can say oh so nah, doing me dirty, you doing me dirty, haven’t a n*gga heard from you, how can you live with yourself, haven’t even heard from you, how can you live with yourself”.
In the song “Big Rings”, Future seemed to take shot at Meek Mill by saying “you just a battle rapper, I’m an official trapper”. Meek Mill, who started as battle rapper, criticized his DJ during his Made In America set for playing too many Future songs hinting towards Future not being a real rapper.
Drake took a quick jab at his rival, Chris Brown, by bringing up his ex-girlfriend Karrueche’s name in the song “Live From the Gutter”. He says “this is for my dogs who go Karrueche with the chopsticks”.
All in all, this album was definitely worth the wait. The clubs will be playing these records in no time and fans will be quoting their songs as their Instagram captions for months to come. The album is currently #1 on iTunes and will probably remain #1 for the next few weeks thanks to the Future Hive and Drake’s loyal fans. What a Time to Be Alive will be available on iTunes and Apple Music exclusively for one week before its widespread release.
