Say what you want about Al Golden as the football coach during his time at the University of Miami, but this story about him visiting one of his former players’ mother in the hospital is as classy as it gets.
Despite being a fired a day earlier, Golden went and visited Artie Burns’ mother while she was dying in the hospital.
Here are the details from the Miami Herald:
Dana Smith, the mother of University of Miami star cornerback Artie Burns, is at a local hospital in grave condition, according to someone close to the team.
UM’s football staff was informed that Smith had a heart attack, though that has not been officially confirmed.
Miami coaches, including former head coach Al Golden, had gathered at the hospital Monday night.
Burns’ latest tweet Sunday, after Golden was fired: “Finishing the season strong for coach golden. wise men did a lot for me.”
This is incredibly classy by Al Golden. He could have found a million and one reasons to be somewhere else and he still went to the hospital to pay his respects to Burns’ mother.
I can always get behind a guy like that no matter what happens on the field.
