I understand trying to break up the double play, but Utley was nowhere near the base.
Tejada had to be carted off and Utley was knocked silly. To add insult to injury, Utley was ruled safe on the play even though he never touched the bag because Tejada never touched the bag.
The rule is if both players don’t touch the bag, the runner is ruled safe even if he is chilling in the dugout.
