Under head coach Mike Krzyzewski USA Basketball has been a monster with two gold medals in Beijing and London. However, win or lose after Rio de Janeiro, it looks like Coach K will be leaving the program.
According to ESPN’s Andy Katz, Krzyzewski believes it’s time to find a successor.
“It is. It definitely is,” Krzyzewski told ESPN about this being his last stint as head coach with USA Basketball. “I think it’s time to move ahead. During the next season there will be a number of decisions made about the future of USA Basketball with Rio [the roster] and coaching.
“There has to be a succession … a planned succession with really good people so we can keep the continuity of the program going.”
With Coach K as head coach for Team USA, he went 75-1. However, don’t over look him staying with Team USA Basketball program in another capacity.
“Hopefully we can finish things up well with Rio and I would move onto something else with USA Basketball,” Krzyzewski said. “But I think we’re ready as an organization to do that, and I’m excited about the future because [of] what we’ve done over the last 10 years.
The commitment under Krzyzewski from NBA players competing to be on USA Basketball was infectious throughout the league. I
t will be very interesting to see who succeeds Coach K as the new head coach.
