As Don King would say, only in America. Only in America can a football coach quit mid-season and still get paid his full year salary. Steve Spurrier announced his resignation not retirement from the South Carolina team last week. However that will not stop South Carolina from paying Spurrier his $4 million dollar salary this year. Most times when you quit your job you do not still get paid. Spurrier will be the exception to that rule. AD Ray Tanner said that Spurrier situation is unique.
“All circumstances are different, especially in collegiate athletics with major college coaches.”
I don’t know which is the better irony. That a college coach can quit and still get paid but yet the athletes he quit on still can’t get paid. Or the fact that the Shawn Elliot who is taking over for Spurrier will only be paid $430K.
