So this weekend definitely happened. That was an actual thing.
One thing I know for sure after taking everything in, I am 100% convinced that there is no elite team in college football this year. Everybody is flawed, and everyone is bound to take an L at one point or another. This makes every week of the college football season very exciting, but very unpredictable. Nobody is safe from the upset bug and the teams that have yet to taste defeat have been teetering on the edge several times.
With all that said, there is plenty of movement in the Final Four for me this week, and plenty of teams now in play to make a run that are just outside the Final Four.
Final Four
- Ohio State
The Buckeyes flirted with disaster yet again this week, as Zeke Elliott put the team on his back in a monster effort to hold off the upset minded Hoosiers. Urban Meyer’s bunch keeps finding ways to win, but the folks in Columbus have to feel a little nervous plenty of season left ahead.
- TCU
The Frogs are moving up in the world after dismantling a very bad Texas team. They benefit from the chaos in the top 10 this weekend, and need to keep winning to if they want to have their shot at the playoff this year. A big game against Baylor down the road should decide the Big 12, with potentially Oklahoma having a say in the conversation as well.
- Baylor
Baylor has been making it look easy on offense and that continued over the weekend. This team will be able to score on anyone it lines up against, and they are looking like this year may be the year they put it all together. Still lots of season left, but they look dangerous early. As much press as they get for throwing the ball around the yard, the Bears lead the nation in rushing so far this year.
- Michigan State
The only reason the Spartans are here right now is because of the five car crash that happened behind them. They barely hung on to a victory over Purdue this weekend and continue to make the case that they are not one of the best teams in college football this year. It is only a matter of time before someone hands them their first loss, and we may not have to wait until the Ohio State game.
Just Missed The Cut:
- LSU
The Tigers got off to a slow start, but eventually romped to a double digit victory over Eastern Michigan. I worry about this team being one dimensional despite that dimension being pretty dang good with Leonard Fournette carrying the ball. That style of play could be problematic in their upcoming matchup against Alabama.
- Alabama
Is anyone really surprised that they beat Georgia this weekend? I’m not. You can never count out a Nick Saban coached team, and they are right back in the hunt.
- Texas A&M
Time to start giving A&M more love here. They got the weapons on offense to give you fits and their defense is playing much better football this year. Can they knock off Alabama when they come to town?
- Clemson
The Tigers were able to hold and come away with a big victory over Notre Dame this weekend. My favorite to win the ACC this year is in a much stronger spot to make a run at the playoff.
