This is a tradition that started ironically during my time at Ohio State. It was a random thing that the school has tried to make more organized.
With the death of this man, the tradition is being permanently banned now.
An unidentified student has died after he was pulled from Mirror Lake on the Ohio State University campus early Wednesday and university officials now say they will ban the jump next year.
University officials said at about noon that they had tentatively identified the man as a student and were contacting his family. Soon afterward, they said Ohio State will ban the jump from now on.
The student was one of thousands who jumped in the lake as part of a tradition that takes place each year on Tuesday night of the week of the Ohio State-Michigan football game. He was pulled from the lake at 12:20 a.m. in cardiac arrest and treated immediately by paramedics.
There has been a lot of injuries over the years, plus the temperature in Mirror Lake at this time of year is freezing, so probably for the best this stops immediately.
