This is reportedly the standard operating protocol among NFL teams, but speaks to how desperate the Jets are to maintain some semblance of playoff hope.
After Ryan Fitzpatrick went down with a thumb injury against the Raiders on Sunday, the Jets became desperate to add another quarterback and according to Pro Football Talk, actually started contacting free agents during the game.
The Jets were also calling around to see if any quarterbacks were available through either trade or free agency once Geno Smith got banged up as well.
Per a league source, the Jets already are making calls during Sunday’s game against the Raiders in search of available quarterbacks, either via trade or free agency.
One intriguing option becomes Ryan Mallett, who arrived in Houston via trade while Jets G.M. Mike Maccagnan was working for the Texans.
The Jets were quick to dispel any truth the reports of interest in Mallett.
Fitzpatrick and Smith were the only two active quarterbacks for the Jets on Sunday, but rookie Bryce Petty is available as well.
