The NFL has former new committee that has been but in place to decided what exactly is a catch. The current rule book seems to leave a gray, unknown or uncertain area on how it should be ruled. The committee includes Ken Whisenhunt, Jim Schwartz and Joe Philbin, all former coaches. Former general manager Bill Polian, former receiver James Thrash and former side judge Tom Finken are all apart of the committee.
Its even been reported that Dez Bryant might get to have his voice heard. Dean Blandino, Vice President of officiating, has acknowledged that he would like to hear from Dez on this very sensitive subject. But as fans of the game, what would be considered a catch?
If we go back a few years, I feel the Calvin Johnson catch was more of a catch than the recent non-catch by Dez Bryant which I also feel was a catch. At the end of the day the wording of the rule needs to be tailored. To me once reviewing these plays, it seem easy to determine if the ground help each of these players catch the ball. The whole “player must make an athletic move” part of the rule is what throws people off. Everyone in the NFL has different level of athleticism so who’s to decide what an “athletic move” is? At the end of the day the rule needs to be adjusted so that games aren’t won or loss due to a questionable wording of a rule.
