Mike Pettine has made some comments over the past 24 hours that are a little strange for a head coach of a team that is 3-10 on the season. First he picked at Russell Wilson, he also had some comments about the 49ers who the Browns defeated last Sunday.
“I thought you saw a team that wanted to be out there and wanted to compete and wanted to win a football game, and I don’t know if I sensed that same attitude from the other side,” Pettine told the Cleveland Plain Dealer
Any reasonable person would expect the 49ers to take exception to these comments. San Francisco offensive coordinator Gene Chryst fired back at Pettine on Tuesday while talking to CSNBayArea.com
“Well, he’s shining his star, saying that, ‘Even though we lost seven in a row, look how we showed up. We’re a team that fights and does not quit, I do know if they had 10’s across the board on all the things he cited, and we were at 1 across the board, then I don’t think they would’ve had a field goal blocked. I don’t think they would’ve had [an interception], which is critical to the game. I don’t think they would’ve had a fumble. I don’t think they would’ve allowed a punt to come back [36 yards].”
Mike Pettine could be right, the 49ers have the worst ranked offense in the league. However, I can’t imagine that he really thinks that his team is in a much better situation. Gene Chryst and the 49ers will probably want the Browns on their schedule next year
