It’s been a year since CM Punk announced that he’d fight in the UFC and for the first time we have a good idea of who he will fight and when that fight will occur.
Many people have guessed that Punk would be saved for UFC 200 in Las Vegas but Dana White has other plans.
“The CM Punk fight is probably going to be in June,” White said. “UFC 199 is what I’m thinking.”
Dana also want’s fans to temper their expectations for Punk’s debut.
“The guy has never fought, he just started training and, you know, this is a tough business to get into,” White said. “When Brock Lesnar came into the UFC, he had a serious wrestling pedigree. And not just WWE wrestling. Legit collegiate wrestling. CM Punk doesn’t have any of that, so it’s going to be tough for him.”
This is probably why Dana is putting Punk in what equates to an amateur fight for his debut. I was under the impression that CM Punk wanted to fight for the UFC (against UFC caliber fighters) but it seems as though he just wants to fight in the UFC (facing MMA newbies).
