The family of 6 year old LaMiya Tucker is upset at a Cleveland,Ohio bakery for misspelling the birthday girl’s name with a racial slur on one of two cakes.
The bakery spelled LaMiya’s name correctly on the first cake, but made a major mistake on the second. Instead of LaMiya, the bakery spelled ‘LaNiga’ on the cake, which would translate to ‘The Nigga’ in spanish.
When the cake was revealed at the party, LaMiya’s mother became very upset and had to console her crying daughter.
LaMiya’s mother, Ashely Hayes, said the following:
“I was very upset and angry and it felt like racism to me cause how do you get one cake wrong and one cake right. You had to notice the mistake.”
“All the other kids knew the words and they were like ooh they put that on her cake.”
“We were in shock.”
The bakery claims that it was an honest mistake and later apologized to LaMiya’s family. LaMiya’s family accepted the apology and are satisfied with the outcome.
It’s hard to tell if this was an honest mistake or another example of not so subtle racism in America. What do you think?
