The last time we saw Miguel Cotto he was getting pummeled by a younger more athletic fighter, Canelo. Many thought he’d hang it up after the loss but his trainer Freddie Roach has other plans.
Roach believes a Cotto vs Marquez fight is exactly what Miguel needs in 2016 and that it’d bring back the true Mexican vs Puerto Rico rivalry.
“I was thinking of opponents for Miguel Cotto down the line and I think [Marquez] would be a perfect [opponent]. That would be a great fight. When a Puerto Rican and a Mexican get together it’s always great. I don’t think he wants to fight Manny any more, maybe he’s done that enough. But Miguel at the right weight, I think it could be a very interesting fight,” Roach told reporter Bernardo Osuna.”
This fight may sell well in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn but the PPV buzz wouldn’t be good at all. At most it’d be a showcase show for Cotto to set up one more big fight for later in 2016.
